Indian superstar Amir Khan and his wife, director and producer Kiran Rao, revealed that they are divorcing after 15 years of marriage.
The couple plan to raise their son Azad together and continue collaborating on films, the Pani Foundation and other projects, the co-owned nonprofit said in a joint statement.
“We started a planned parting some time ago, and now we feel comfortable formulating this arrangement while living separately, sharing our lives the way extended families do,” he said.
“Now we want to start a new chapter in our lives, not as husbands and wives, but as co-parents and families for each other,” he added.
The 56-year-old Khan, who has two children from a previous marriage, is one of the highest-grossing Bollywood actors. Beyond India, he also enjoys the next big fan base in China, the second-largest movie market in the world.
Rao is a filmmaker and director.
The couple met in the Oscar-nominated 2001 film Ragaanset and tied the knot in 2005.
In 2016, he co-founded the Pani Foundation, a nonprofit organization that fights drought in the western state of Maharashtra.
“In these 15 years, we have shared the experience, joy and laughter of our lifetimes, and our relationship has grown only with trust, respect, and love,” he said.
