Netflix to release games on ‘The Queen’s Gambit,’ ‘Money Heist’

Netflix is drawing inspiration from popular original series such as The Queen’s Gambit and La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) to create a slew of new mobile games for its streaming platform.

The company is expected to release nine new games by the end of the year, including a chess and puzzle game titled Queen’s Gambit in the summer. The Queen’s Gambit Chess, a single- and multi-player game published by Ripstone Ltd. in the United Kingdom, will feature chess lessons, puzzles, matches, and competition with other users. Paladin Studios will also release this summer a family puzzle game inspired by Netflix’s baking competition show Nailed It!

The streamer will release four additional games in 2022, including one based on the popular series La Casa de Papel. Kilasoft’s single-player game will transport players to Monaco as the team prepares to rob a casino belonging to a billionaire. The dating simulation game from developer Nanobit and publisher Stillfront Group will be based on Too Hot to Handle, while Chimera Entertainment’s role-playing game will immerse players in the world of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone.

Netflix launched its first mobile games based on the Stranger Things IP in August 2016 under the supervision of Mike Verdu, vice president of game development. Since then, the streaming giant, whose subscriber growth has slowed and whose stock price has plummeted, has been on an acquisitions binge, acquiring independent game developers such as Night School Studio and Next Games.

Last month, Netflix also released the mobile game Exploding Kittens, which is tied to an upcoming Mike Judge and Greg Daniels-produced adult animated comedy of the same name.
