Starring Suraj Sharma, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, and Adil Hussain, the trailer for The Illegal have been released. It sounds like a heartbreaking story of a man who wants to fulfill his dream of becoming a filmmaker but hunted down by society and different restrictions.
The trailer gives a glimpse into the story where the protagonist, played by Suraj, gets admission to a famous film university in the United States. His sister in India, played by Sweta encourages him throughout the process, but the parents he stays with don’t really appreciate his creative dreams. Life throws him another curve when he struggles at work and is fired from his job.
Suraj made his mark in Hollywood with Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. He played a central role in Homeland’s later seasons and was last seen in the Apple TV series Little America.
Renzu said in an statement: “This film is close to my heart, and filming it was so exciting. I am also delighted with the release of the movie to a wider audience. Although the film was well-received at several film festivals, I’m still worried about the audience’s reaction. ”
The Illegal had its international premiere at Austin Film Festival in 2019. It also screened at MAMI 2019. Previously, The Illegal was also Oscar-shortlisted for Best Picture but did not reach final nominations.
The Illegal was directed by Danish director Renzu and will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video from March 23.
